In this portion of the website, you can access the documents and resources listed at right (see bottom for explanations of each). The “Big Ten” list by Brother Marinakis is a compilation of the knowledge he’s accumulated on what it takes to have a strong chapter. Between this wisdom and the tools at right, it’s a blueprint for the Omicron’s success.
THE BIG TEN MAXIMS: FUNDAMENTALS OF A GOOD HOUSE
By Dean C. Marinakis ‘90
I. | If alumni stop coming to Homecoming weekend, don’t expect your chapter to do well.
II. | Our two most valuable resources are our chapter house and its members–and we must invest heavily in both.
III. | If you do not have a newsletter, you are not serious about fundraising.
IV. | We’ve always had quality guys. Every chapter does. But we’re at our best when we have more of them.
V. | No quality guy wants to live in squalor. Make no mistake about it: Not only are we in the education business, we’re also in the housing business.
VI. | If your house is not filled, you are losing money.
VII. | Rush is the lifeblood of any chapter. Do well, and you can become a force on campus. Do poorly, and risk extinction.
VIII. | If you want strong chapters, you need strong Alumni Associations. Its corollary: If you want strong Alumni Associations, you need a stronger International Office.
IX. | Rehabilitation projects just don’t happen on their own: They require planning, investigating, diligence and working with the right pros to be properly done and on time and within budget. Experience tells us that they don’t get easier with time, or less expensive.
X. | Fraternities by their nature are dysfunctional. We all know that by now. By being less dysfunctional, you’ll be successful.
XI. | Recruitment of more quality members should be paramount. |
Explanation of the resources archived in the list at right
- Psi U – By the Numbers – Collection of key Omicron statistics from membership and g.p.a. to the SGP program and fundraising
- The Executive Master Calendar – Developed by Dean Marinakis ’90, this calendar of key dates will help provide for a smooth transition from one administration to another and maintain the effectiveness and momentum of our organization. It is the responsibility of the alumni president and executive council to assure that our organization runs efficiently. It is hoped that this master calendar and agenda will provide a valuable tool to do so. It will also give the undergraduate chapter a sense of the planning required “behind the scenes.” Future alumni administrations are encouraged to add and revise this list.
- Alumni Exec Goals – This annual list of goals is developed by the Alumni Executive Officers in consultation with the Undergraduate Exec and the Chapter Advisor.
- Board Meeting Minutes – The Omicron Alumni Association meets four times a year – Homecoming, Fall, Winter, and Spring and these are the archived minutes.
- Current Financials – These spreadsheets are prepared by Joe Miller ’57 and reflect the chapter’s financial picture.
- Tradesmen, Vendors & Key Contacts List – An alphabetized directory of all the professionals we’ve worked with on house operations.
